🎄 Finding Holiday Joy Amid the Stress: A Small Act of Kindness Goes a Long Way 🎅

Holidays can be an extremely stressful time of the year. The shopping 🛍️, the parties 🎉, the meals for family and friends 🍽️, the expectations 🎁, and even the disappointments—it can all become overwhelming. But sometimes, even the smallest acts of kindness can make all the difference. Let me share a fun story of how I handled the stress of Christmas shopping one year and brought a little cheer to those around me.

Once upon a time, my husband, Bill, and I went shopping for Christmas gifts for our nieces and nephews. We headed to a store called Venture, a discount department store that competed with Target 🎯 and was close to our home. This was where our Christmas shopping adventure began.

The toy department, our destination, was at the very back of the store, meaning we had to pass through all the other departments first. Bill, however, decided he wasn’t in the mood for holiday fun and was channeling his inner Grinch 😒. I tried to lighten the mood—we had already enjoyed dinner at one of our favorite restaurants 🍝, and I had even plied him with a cocktail or two 🍸, hoping for a jolly shopping companion. Unfortunately, the crowds and narrow aisles only heightened his irritation.

By the time we reached the toy department 🎲🧸, the aisles were so narrow that only one buggy could fit at a time. You had to let someone come out before you could go in. Sensing Bill’s growing frustration, I made a suggestion: “Why don’t you park here in the men’s department, and I’ll grab the toys?” He eagerly agreed.

As I dove into the toy aisles, Bill—standing at a safe distance—suddenly shouted, “Enter at your own peril! People have entered the toy department weeks ago, never to be seen again!” His comedic timing was perfect, and the tension in the air evaporated like a popped balloon 🎈. Shoppers who had looked weary moments before were now chuckling and smiling 😄. Bill continued his playful warnings, and the atmosphere in the store transformed.

I think my favorite announcement that Bill made, and continues to make today, is, “There are no velvet Elvis paintings in this store!” 🎨🎤

Once we had gathered all the gifts 🎁, we made our way to the checkout. On our way, I spotted an end cap stocked with White Fudge Covered Oreo Cookies 🍪. These seasonal delights are only available during the holidays, so naturally, I grabbed several boxes.

Unlike today, every checkout lane was open and staffed with a cashier 💳, though each had a line of disheveled shoppers waiting to pay. That’s when inspiration struck! I opened one of the boxes of Oreos and began offering cookies to the other shoppers. At first, some of the grinches in line said "No" 😠 without a second thought, but one young mother with a three-year-old daughter gladly accepted. Soon, the atmosphere in the checkout lanes lightened as more people accepted my offer, and the better part of two boxes of cookies was gone 🍪😊.

When we reached the cashier, a young man in his teens, I asked if he’d like a cookie. He hesitated, saying he could get in trouble, but after a bit of playful insistence, he quickly snatched one and ducked under the counter to eat it in one bite 🍪😋. He popped back up with a grin that lit up his entire face!

This became a tradition for Bill and me—we would share cookies while waiting in checkout lanes during the holidays, lightening the mood and spreading some unexpected cheer ✨. Now, with so much of our shopping done online 💻 and our nieces and nephews preferring cash over gifts 💵, we don’t visit the stores much during the holidays. But if I do go this year and find those White Fudge Covered Oreos, you can bet I’ll pick up an extra box to share!
